Do you think it's more important to take care of the people in your own country first or even in this difficult economic climate should we still be sending money to other countries who need help?

I'm more on the side of cleaning up our own backyard first. Just like I have a problem with people who adopt from other countries when there are so many children in North America who need a family. I understand the appeal of adopting out of country, but it still bothers me that people choose, or are forced, to go out of country. When I see the problems with our schools, with our health care system, with the economic problems most of North America is facing, it makes me sad that the government can send millions or billions of dollars to feed and clothe children in other countries, but will not pay out to feed or clothe our own kids. I think it's a situation where we need to be selfish on our own behalf. You wouldn't go to someone off the street (homeless bum) and ask him to give you a loan. You wouldn't go to a counselor for emotional problems who had unstable emotional problems of their own. Right now it seems like the blind leading the blind. If we can't take care of our own problems, how can we be expected to take care of other people's problems? Besides, we're not doing such a great job of it anyways. I would much rather see education going to other countries, so that they can help themselves. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. TEACH a man to fish, and he eats for life. And at the moment, we're handing out fish left, right, and center, and starving ourselves in the meantime.

I think if a country can afford to have it's own space, nuclear etc programmes and if it can afford to give overseas aid of it's own then I don't believe we should be giving aid, it's own government should be doing that. I think we should be supporting things such as Marys Meals which feeds 557,259 children a meal at school every day. That particular project is feeding children, getting communities involved and encouraging families to send children to school so they can get themselves out of poverty. It costs £9.40/$15 dollars to feed a child per year, if the government is giving overseas aid that is where it should be spent!
