It's Friday night here, so not so simple to get any tests done, etc, or even to get into a doctor before Monday unless it is emergency, so I though I'd pick some very wise brains My 6 year old daughter has suddenly, just today, wet herself 3 times. Obviously this is very distressing for her, so I am trying to keep it as no big deal, but I am concerned. She hasn't wet herself since she was toilet trained. It hasn't be a lot, she has made it as far as the toilet, and then managed to get herself on the toilet before it goes everywhere, but she still has peed a little bit in her pants each time. Once I calmed her down I asked her some questions so I could get some idea of what may be going on, and she has told me it doesn't hurt to pee, and that she doesn't know its coming, and that it is just really runny (and with her gestures etc, it was an indication that she doesn't even feel herself peeing). Any ideas on what else I can ask her, whether this might be the signs of a UTI, or maybe something else? Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm just not quite sure how to deal with it (and am unlikely to get into a doctor until at least Monday). Obviously I'm going to see how it goes over the weekend, but was interested in feedback. If it was a once off, I wouldn't be so concerned, but this happened 3 times this afternoon.

What was she doing when she had the accidents? Meaning, was she REALLY preoccupied? I'd also see if she'd let you sit with her one time while she pees to make sure she's completely emptied her bladder. Maybe she's just not "done" when she thinks she is and ends up having an accident because she's not empty?
Hope it's nothing icky!

Hmmm...I think I remember going through something like that at around five years old and it was me just being too busy. I -personally- would just give it time and if there were signs of infection by Monday seek care. If there weren't I would just continue to see how things go.
Perhaps as a preemtive thing raw garlic? Hard to get into a child I'm sure, but 4-5 cloves daily is an excellent anti-microbial.

No, I don't believe it was that she was preoccupied. The first time, we were at the shops just grabbing a couple of things and she told me she needed to go and I took her. It's only a small shopping centre, so the toilets aren't far, and she didn't make it. The second time, she was about to have a bath and she was getting undressed. The third time was just before bed while she was cleaning her teeth. She is absolutely adamant she didn't feel it coming. She just hasn't been able to make it to the toilet.
I will just keep an eye on it and see how it goes. Lisa, I will try and see if I can get some garlic in her, but do you think perhaps some acidophilus may be as effective? I know I can get that in chewables for her.
Your post just made me think that perhaps the fact she has been on antibiotics recently has screwed up her system. If forgot about that until now. She was quite sick a few weeks ago (we think now it was whooping cough, long story) and she was on 2 courses of antibiotics, so that could have contributed.....

I'm sure acidophilus wouldn't hurt a bit . You know- I just thought of something else- kid's bladders don't always grow at the same rate as their bodies. Kids can have accidents like this when their bladders just aren't keeping up with things at the moment.

My almost seven year old did this not that long ago, she was getting changed and she just peed on the floor, she was just standing there confused and not knowing whether to laugh or be embarrassed, then it happened again a few hours later. This is a girl who never had an accident after being toilet trained very young, I din't know what to make of it and neither did she. I just gave her cranberry juice in case it was a bladder infection an she was fine the next day. I would just keep an eye on the situation, give her some cranberry juice and plenty of water, if it's still happening after the weekend or she is in pain take her to the doctors. If not I would just chalk it up to one of those things.

I second the cranberry juice. Can't hurt even if it doesn't help. If there's no pain, no burning, etc, I would think that it's just that her system is out of whack, for whatever reason. Whether it's the antibiotics (which I think could be likely) or something else. Like other people have said, if it continues over the weekend, it wouldn't hurt to have her checked out to rule anything important out and to maybe fix things if it doesn't sort itself out. Good luck

Thank you ladies!! I will get some cranberry juice and give that a try too and just keep an eye on her. She seems okay this morning, and hasn't had any accidents overnight that I'm aware of. I love you guys

Yeah if she has no pain, burning or frequency, I would say it's unlikely to be a nasty infection. If you do take her to the doc after the weekend, take a specimen in with you and they can send it straight off (it will just shorten the process and mean you won't need to make another trip back to the surgery if she can't give one at the time). GL!

Thank you ladies. She ended up with a fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is just a bug, and the peeing herself came with it. And this morning, she is bouncing off walls again, talking her head off (hasn't shut up yet) and not a thing wrong with her.
